A photo update

Here are a few of the photos we've taken over the past few weeks. Mattie is loving her new school and friends. The only thing she is having a hard time with is naptime. Drop off goes okay as long as she starts eating breakfast right away.

Mattie is getting three new teeth right now so we are trying to keep her comfortable!

New School

This past week has been an emotional rollercoaster with a few highs and lows. Here are the high(light)s:

Mattie got her first big boo-boo when she fell forward onto her wagon when she was playing. It instantly swelled and she still has a bruise. It was so hard to hold her while she was crying and know that I couldn't take the pain away. Made me so sad!

We are getting a bright new, shiny pair of two front teeth in our house. They have not broken through the gums but I can tell they are coming soon.

Last Thursday we got a very unexpected call from the Early Childhood Development Lab on the OSU campus. We had applied for Mattie to be in the 1-year-old class last year but she did not get in. They had a very last minute cancellation and were able to offer us a spot which we accepted. This meant that we had to notify her daycare and switch her to a different school in LESS than a week. It was a very hard decision and ultimately I know we did the right thing. We will miss our friends at Oak Tree Children's Academy, especially Miss Donna - Mattie's teacher. She taught her so many things and was such a great caregiver to our little pumpkin.

Today was Mattie's first day of school at the CDL and she did great. One of the major perks is that the daycare is two buildings away from where I work, so we get to walk to work together everyday. Also, there are observation booths so I can go peek in on her during the day without her hearing or seeing me. They get to take little wagon rides around the campus. It is really a neat place!

Well, that about sums up the past week in the Horton household. We hope each of you has a blessed weekend.

Much love,
The Hortons

Ladybug Birthday Bash

We celebrated Mattie's first birthday in style this summer with a ladybug birthday bash - perfect for our little lovebug. Here are some great photos from the event. I had so much fun designing her invitations, cupcake toppers and other party materials and have decided that it's going to be my 'creative outlet' every year to keep me sane. We had a blast and are so thankful for all the friends and family that joined us for our pumpkin's special 1st birthday!

It was really hot outside so we hung out in the shade and the kids got some great pool time at the Talley Ranch. :)

An open letter to Mattie Cakes - Year One

To our sweet Mattie,

This past year you have blessed your Daddy and I in so many ways. Everyday has been a new, exciting adventure with you and we have enjoyed getting to share in some of your little life's early milestones. Over the past month, you have grown leaps and bounds every day. Just when we think you can't get any bigger, you do something new that amazes us. Your zest for life has helped us to treasure each day with you and thank God for all he has given us.

On July 7, we celebrated your 1st year in style by having a ladybug bash with your closest family and friends at the Talley Ranch. All of your family helped decorate and cook food for the big day and you had a blast eating your jumbo white chocolate-strawberry cupcake. You took big bites and said, "Mmmmm!"

We have so much fun watching you learn and explore new things. Your personality is showing more and more - and with that we have become acquainted with your strong will. You are so determined to do things yourself and are so happy and proud for yourself when accomplishing something. For example, you learned from your friends at school how to feed yourself with a utensil before we had even given you utensils to eat with. You started refusing to let us feed you because you wanted to do it yourself and eat with us like a 'big' person does. This has made for some fun family dinner nights!

It is very clear how much you love life and people. It does not matter if it is us, family, friends or strangers - you are happy to see a friendly face. Also, you have quickly mastered "hi", "bye", and waving. You love waving and smiling at people and they love waving back at you, too! When you get older, we are going to teach you about 'stranger danger', you will need a good lesson in it.

Speaking of new words, we are having a hard time keeping up with all that you say! I have been keeping a list but have quickly lost track. Just today you said two new words, "paper" and "hot". A few others you have mastered are: puppy, doggy, book, please, car, Reese, no, hat, Papa, momma, daddy, horse, and "weeeee!".

We lost a special friend today. Pepper will be greatly missed. Hoping she's chasing lots of ducks in the sky tonight.

This month, we lost a dear family member whom you loved, Pepper. Weeks before she passed, you loved to go visit her in her kennel, cling to the door and say "Pepper!", over and over. You really loved her and also called her your "doggie". It was so sad to let her go, but we are glad that she is no longer suffering.

This week, you are officially weaned and it has gone without incident. Bedtime is our favorite time to rock and sing and it has been hard letting your Daddy have that fun job while you're adjusting. So far you have done well and have gone right to sleep. I miss having our 'special' time but am proud of you and what a big girl you have become. You teach me something new everyday and help me to be more patient with myself and others, and to stop and enjoy each moment we are given.

Thank you for loving us and giving us hugs and kisses everyday. We are your biggest fans and will continue to help you as you learn and grow. We thank God for giving us the best daughter in the whole world.

Love you bunches,
Momma
